DescriptionA charming watercolour painting with gouache details by the British artist J. Lawrence Hart, depicting a landscape scene with a river and a farm in the distance. Inscribed to reverse 'Riverside Farm, Nordelph, Norfolk'. Signed to the lower right-hand corner. Well-presented in a golden slip and in a simple gilt frame. On watercolour paper.
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, small surface marks and minor foxing. Some marks to the slip and small scuffs and scratches to the frame.

J. Lawrence Hart (c.1830-1907) was a painter of landscapes in a typical Victorian manner. Hart was born in Birmingham and was the son of a cement manufacturer. He studied at Birmingham Municipal School of Art. Little is known about his life but he was a prolific exhibitor showing at Agnew's, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Society of British Artists and Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. Examples of his work are in the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. His death was recorded in Pwllheli, Wales.
